History

Sir Michael Tippett established the Foundation in 1979 with funds from the sale of his manuscripts to the British Library.

The collection includes the operas The Knot Garden, The Ice Break and New Year, choral works such as A Child of Our Time, The Vision of St Augustine and The Mask of Time, all five string quartets, and the four symphonies and piano sonatas. Additional manuscripts include working notebooks, letters and some early unpublished works. All this material is available for study at the Library.

The Foundation's purpose is to make donations in the field of music and in its first twenty years more than 500 grants were given to organisations across the United Kingdom to support young musicians and composers, new music and music education initiatives.

Following Sir Michael's death in 1998 the Foundation had a dormant period, but re-opened to applications in 2007 and the Guidelines page gives information on the Trustees' current priorities. Please read the Guidelines before applying.
