Grants

Our Grants Policy

We are a small Foundation with funds from the royalties generated by performances, broadcasts and publication of the works of composer Michael Tippett (1905–98).

Our two objectives are:

  1. to award grants to support the development of group music-making especially involving young people, with composing central to the project

  2. to support the performance or recording of works by Michael Tippett

In 2023 the Trustees decided to focus the Foundation’s activity exclusively on the funding of performances and recording of music by Michael Tippett, with the aim of generating greater revenue for a wider range of activities in future years. This will remain the case in 2024.

The situation will be continually reviewed for future years. Please read the Guidelines carefully before applying.

Guidelines

What we might support

For 2024 we are looking to support the performance or recording anywhere in the world of music composed by Tippett. The Trustees will consider applications pertaining to any of his compositions but are likely to prioritise plans for specific works that are less frequently performed or projects which are unlikely to be mounted without additional financial support.  Projects which involve young people, or which have a participatory element will be looked at with particular interest.

We are not currently able to support research into the music of Tippett. If you are unsure as to the suitability or eligibility of your project please be in touch.

All performance material is available from Schott - sole publishers of Tippett’s music - and the award of a grant from the Foundation should not be taken to mean that any relevant performances licenses have been granted.

What we might give

Grants are likely to be between £500 and £3000, with the average grant in the region of £2000. Larger grants may be considered for significant projects. Demand is often greater than the funds available, and only a minority of applications can be supported.

When to apply

The Trustees normally hold one meeting a year, in the autumn. The deadline for applications is 30 September 2024. Projects for consideration should start not earlier than January 2025.

How to Apply

 Applications should include:

  1. An attached project description (maximum length 2 single-sided A4 pages at 12pt type) for presentation to Trustees, which might include (as appropriate):

    • A brief outline of what you are planning.

    • The time scale of the project, including dates of concert or recording.

    • How the project will be accessed (including, as appropriate, the names of promoters / venues / streaming sites / record companies). You may be asked to demonstrate the commitment of external organisations to this project.

    • The key repertoire relevant to this application.

    • The names of the principal musicians and other key participants, including brief biographical and any other relevant information (you may wish to provide external links).

    • A demonstration of why the project would not be possible without additional income and, where possible, the specific application of extra funds.

    • The specific sum requested.

  2. An attached project budget on a single page, showing estimated expenditure, anticipated income from all sources, including grants and applications from/to other bodies, with explanatory notes if needed. The trustees understand that a grant from the Tippett Foundation may be only one of a number of different funding sources.

Sending Your Application

  • Applications should be sent in electronic format (PDF, doc or docx., xls or xlsx) to admin@tippettfoundation.org.uk

  • If you wish to provide sound/visual evidence please arrange to do so via Wetransfer or similar rather than attaching large files.

  • All eligible applications received will be acknowledged. We will aim to give you the result of your application within 12 weeks of the deadline.
